Chicory Root Tea: A Roasted, Caffeine-Free Coffee Alternative
Share
What Is Chicory Root?
Chicory is a hardy plant with bright blue flowers. Its root is dried, cut and roasted, and has been brewed as a coffee substitute in Europe and the American South for more than two centuries. Roasting gives it a deep brown color and a toasty, slightly bitter flavor that many coffee drinkers enjoy.
1. A Coffee-Like Flavor Without Caffeine
Roasted chicory has the body and bittersweet edge of coffee, but it contains no caffeine. That makes it an easy swap for an afternoon or evening cup.
2. Naturally Contains Inulin
Chicory root is one of the richest natural sources of inulin, a plant fiber that gives the brew a smooth, slightly sweet finish.
3. Blends Well With Flowers and Herbs
Chicory's roasted base pairs nicely with floral and green notes. In our blend, gardenia fruit adds warm color, lily flower adds aroma, and mulberry leaf and kudzu root round out the cup.
How to Brew Chicory Tea
Steep one tea bag in 200–250 ml (7–8.5 oz) of water at 80–100°C (176–212°F) for 3–5 minutes. Steep longer for a bolder, more coffee-like cup. It is also good chilled over ice.
