Cassia Seed Tea: A Nutty, Roasted Traditional Brew
Share
What Is Cassia Seed Tea?
Cassia seeds (jue ming zi) are the small, glossy seeds of the Senna obtusifolia plant. In China and Korea they are lightly roasted and brewed into a popular everyday tea, much like roasted barley tea.
1. Warm, Nutty Flavor
Roasting gives cassia seeds a toasty, nutty taste with a hint of coffee. The tea is light-bodied and smooth.
2. Naturally Caffeine-Free
Cassia seed contains no caffeine, so it is a comfortable choice for evening sipping.
3. Blends Beautifully
Cassia seed is often brewed with chrysanthemum for a floral lift, or with goji berries for a touch of sweetness.
How to Brew Cassia Seed Tea
Lightly toast the seeds in a dry pan until fragrant to deepen the flavor. Steep 1–2 teaspoons (or one tea bag) in hot water (around 93°C / 200°F) for 5–8 minutes. Cassia seed is traditionally enjoyed in moderate amounts; if you have a medical condition, are pregnant or nursing, ask your healthcare provider before drinking it regularly.
